GM to double production of fuel-efficient engines

CHICAGO (AFP) - General Motors announced plans Thursday to double its global production of more fuel-efficient small engines by 2011 with the help of a new engine plant in struggling Flint, Michigan. ADVERTISEMENT

More than half of the increase in production will come from North America, where GM has faced a sharp drop in demand for its gasoline guzzling trucks and sport utility vehicles.

GM said small four-cylinder engines will account for a third of its North American production in 2011, up from 21 percent in 2007.

This will also help GM comply with new legislation requiring all automakers to raise the average fuel economy of vehicles sold in the US market to 35 miles (56 kilometers) per gallon (3.8 liters).

The Bush administration has estimated that retooling for the new standards would cost automakers 100 billion dollars.

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill that will offer automakers and suppliers up to 25 billion dollars in guaranteed government loans to help fund the development of “advanced technology vehicles.”

The bill is expected to be approved by the senate and President George W. Bush in the coming days.

GM’s new plant in Flint, Michigan will begin production in 2010 and will produce a range-extending engine for the plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt alongside a turbo-charged 1.4 liter engine for the Chevrolet Cruze.

Construction on the 349 million dollar facility is expected to begin “immediately” the automaker said. The 552,000 square foot plant will employ about 300 union workers.

GM said it will invest an additional 21 million dollars for vendor tooling to support the new Flint operations.

Chery Auto to buy Volvo ?

dodge magnum vertical doors nice dash kit store. Ford isn’t having a great time in terms of sales and profit lately so rumors are starting to appear that other car groups are bidding for its subsidiaries. Such is the case with Volvo, quite a few groups showing interest in the Scandinavian manufacturer like Renault, Shanghai Auto or Dongfeng Motors. But none of these firms seem to be as close to owning Volvo than Chinese producer Chery Auto.

Chinese business magazine Caijing reports that Chery Auto has great interest in Volvo, wanting to incorporate their highly appreciated safety standards in their cars, chinese vehicles being always regarded by western buyers as unsafe and dangerous, crash tests showing a lot of poor results.

Although they are reported as not having reached an agreement more so, official declarations of Chery Auto are dismissing their interest in the Swedish manufacturer, inside sources are saying that the Chinese producer is already taking an interest in banks and equity firms that will eventually back up their acquisition. Ford hasn’t publicly declared a price for Volvo, but some say that it will be around $4.4 billion.

The new Audi A6 facelift revealed

Chrysler 300 hid kits nice dash kit store. Yesterday, the German company revealed the facelift for the new Audi A6. To be honest, I really liked the way the press release starts: “A winner always builds on his strengths: That’s why Audi has again upgraded its luxury class A6 model”. Sounds pretty cool, huh? Anyways, the new A6 features new engines, new technologies that cut fuel consumption by about 15 percent, improved suspension, new high-tech assistance system that give the driver even greater control over the car and new-generation MMI control system.

Exterior changes include restyled single-frame grill, bumpers, air vents and fog lights, optionally-available xenon plus LED daytime running lights and new LED talilights. Audi’s latest addition to A6’s engine range is a new 3.0 liter V6 TFSI engine that develops 290 hp (213 kW) and 420 Nm (309.78 lb-ft) of torque. Combined with the tiptronic gearbox and quattro drive train, the engine takes the new A6 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds and up to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), while achieving a fuel consumption of 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (24.76 US mpg) on the EU cycle.

The new Audi A6 facelift will be available in Germany in mid-October with pricing starting at 34,200 Euros for the A6 2.0 TFSI sedan. There’s no point in saying that the new Audi A6 will come with top of the line technologies and infotainment systems. You can read all that in the full press release.
